Debbie Kanter
Consultant Counselling Psychologist

In-Person & Online Therapy sessions £210

Debbie is a consultant counselling psychologist with over 25 years of clinical experience, specialising in the treatment of eating disorders. She is a trusted expert in managing conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other specified eating disorders, working across both NHS and private practice settings.

Debbie began her professional journey as a community pharmacist but soon found her passion for the therapeutic relationships she formed with patients. This led her to retrain as a counselling psychologist, and she spent over 21 years at the world-renowned Maudsley Hospital in London. Initially working within general adult mental health, Debbie quickly transitioned to the hospital’s Eating Disorders Unit, where she focused her clinical practice. She served as the department clinical lead for group therapy and also for the treatment of co-morbid diabetes and eating disorders.

Beyond her clinical practice, Debbie established the honorary psychology trainee program at the Maudsley, recruiting, teaching and supervising doctoral students. She contributed to research trials, most notably the development of the MANTRA approach, and lectured MSc students at the Institute of Psychiatry.

In 2021, Debbie became the Head of Eating Disorders at Noa Girls, where she founded and continues to develop the service, with a primary focus on the assessment and treatment of eating disorders. She oversees clinical care, provides supervision for her team, and ensures the highest standards of patient-centred care. Alongside her work at Noa Girls, Debbie runs a thriving private practice, treating adolescents and adults where she offers individualized care for eating disorders as well as related difficulties such as anxiety, depression, autism, ADHD, and self-harm. She also provides crucial support to families and carers, guiding them through the recovery process with their loved ones.

Debbie continues to support the NHS by working with Health Education England in partnership with Kings College Hospital and the South London Maudsley Trust as a mentor on the Eating Disorders Services Adult Whole Team (EDSA) training program.

Debbie’s therapeutic approach is aligned with NICE guidelines and as such, she uses first line approaches for the treatment of eating disorders including CBT-E (cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders), MANTRA (Maudsley Model for the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa), SSCM (specialist supportive clinical management) and FT-AN (family therapy for anorexia nervosa). Together with other modalities her therapeutic approach is always tailored to individual needs, based on collaboration, compassion, empathy, and respect.

Outside of work, Debbie is an avid skier who finds peace in the mountains and snow. She enjoys tennis, hiking, and spending time with her five children. A lover of socializing, Debbie enjoys entertaining at home, visiting restaurants, and attending the theatre. She also values quiet moments reading, playing the piano and watching films.

Debbie has full registration with the BPS (British Psychological Society) and HCPC (Health Care and Professions Council) and is a provider with all major private health insurers.
